Government identifies 88 criminal organizations operating in Brazil

An intelligence report by the National Secretariat for Penal Policies (Senappen), a federal government body linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, mapped the activities of criminal organizations in Brazil and recognized the activities of 88 of them in the country.

Of this total, 91% have independent financial power, which means they can operate without any support, and 98% are present in at least one prison unit.

“Identifying the activities of these groups is fundamental to understanding the magnitude of the problem and developing effective strategies to combat them”, stated André Garcia, National Secretary for Penal Policies.

In the last three years, 72 of these organizations operated only in the state in which they are headquartered. However, 14 managed to expand to neighboring states.

According to the report, only two, Comando Vermelho (CV) and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) have operating arms at national and international level.

In Rio de Janeiro, the CV, which is experiencing a territorial war with the Third Pure Command (TCP) in some parts of the state, expanded its operating arm to states such as Amapá, Pernambuco and Espírito Santo.

Currently, according to the survey, around 125 pavilions are under the total “domain” of the CV.
