Government is able to double the number of ICU beds, says Queiroga

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, said, in a press conference this Thursday (13), that the federal government can double the number of intensive care beds, if necessary.

Several states report an increase in the ICU occupancy rate. According to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), at least ten capitals have an ICU occupancy rate for Covid-19 above 60%.

Queiroga stated that this is due to the deactivation of beds and not necessarily due to pressure on the health system such as that of March and April 2021.

“It doesn’t mean that there is a higher number of hospitalizations, sometimes it’s because the number of beds got smaller due to the deactivation. The government is in a position to double the number of intensive care beds,” he said.

Even so, the minister pointed out that, if there is an increase in the number of patients who require medical care, the health system is more capable and prepared.
