Government is considering opening more vacancies in repatriation operations for citizens of South American countries

Brazil is considering opening more places on repatriation flights for citizens from the region of the war between Israel and Hamas to be able to bring citizens from South American countries that asked for help.

The information was released by the Minister of the Secretariat of Communication, Paulo Pimenta, this Sunday (22), in a live broadcast on Instagram. “We have received requests from our Argentine, Uruguayan, Bolivian, Chilean and Peruvian brothers who do not have logistics like our [para a repatriação]. I tend to think that in the coming days, we will increase the number of vacancies so that the brothers who are there can also return. This is called solidarity”, stated Pimenta.

The Brazilian government has received requests for help in repatriation from neighboring countries since the beginning of the operation. But the priority, so far, is rescuing the nationals.

In the most recent repatriation trip, which ended on Saturday (21), three Bolivians embarked for Brazil on the Brazilian Air Force’s KC-390 aircraft along with 66 Brazilians and nine pets.

It was the first time that the Brazilian government was able to respond to a request from its neighbors. With Pimenta’s announcement, the presence of South Americans on FAB flights should become more common.

According to members of the Brazilian government, the next Brazilian Air Force flights will take place on demand. And to the extent that there are open positions, they will be offered to citizens of other neighboring countries that do not have the same logistics.

To date, Brazil has repatriated 1204 people and 44 pets on 7 flights from the Middle East to Brazil.

Brazilians in Gaza

The Minister of the Communications Secretariat also spoke of the 30 Brazilians who are in the Gaza Strip and are waiting for the border with Egypt to open to embark back to Brazil.

Pimenta said that rescuing these families is a priority for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). “We are working day and night, every day, to also enable Brazilians who are in Gaza to also return home with safety. Diplomatic negotiations with Egypt, with Israel, with all sectors involved have been a priority for Brazilian diplomacy and for President Lula himself,” he stated.

“So, as soon as possible, we will ensure that this possibility is guaranteed for Brazilian families who are in Gaza”, added Pimenta.
