Government makes informal analysis on Petrobras privatization; company denied study in a statement

President Jair Bolsonaro did not give up on the Petrobras privatization proposal, despite the company’s official statement saying that there are no studies on the matter in the Ministry of Economy or the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

According to reports from presidential aides to the CNN Brasil, government technicians have carried out an informal analysis, at the request of the president, should he decide to present a proposal to the National Congress.

On Friday (5th), Petrobras released a statement to the market informing that it received returns from the federal government about possible moves involving its privatization. According to the company, there is no study done in this regard so far.

According to government advisers, as this is not an official analysis, portfolios in the economic area informed Petrobras that there was no formal study, but that the president did not give up on the proposal.

The informal analysis aims to provide technical arguments to the president if he decides to carry out the state company’s privatization discourse, promoting an official study on the subject.

Since October, the president has stated that he wants to privatize Petrobras. He has complained about being blamed for the subsequent increases in fuel prices.

As it is a mixed capital company, with shares on the Stock Exchange, a privatization or capitalization of the company must have authorization from the National Congress.

The proposal, however, has resistance even from the allied base and, in the assessment of party leaders, has little chance of success at this time.
