Government must triple investment to prevent digital attacks, says expert

Wanderson Castilho, expert in cybercrime, explained to CNN that the time is for caution and that the government should invest in digital security.

“Since the beginning of the year, we had 27 million leaked data, this year was the record for data leakage in the Brazil.”

The expert points out that there is no system 100% secure and that, all hackers already knew.

Despite this, he said: “It needs government investment on defenses more than ever. After the pandemic everything went online, the need to triple security is extremely urgent.”

Castilho usually counts digital attacks asking for a cash ransom for the data.

However, the chance of feedback on a government website does not make sense. “To me, it makes a lot more sense that it was a political attack than a professional cybercrime,” he said.

A Federal police it speaks of something temporal, called hacktivism (joining hack + activism). “What is happening is the smoke attack, as if it were a demand for ransom, but in reality it is intended to affect the government’s image”, evaluates Castilho.

“The vulnerability on the government website is already very well known. I think it was a moment they took advantage of when this great discussion is taking place. [sobre passaporte da vacina] and made the hacktivism attack.”

The website of Ministry of Health (www.saude.gov.br/) was out of the air due to a hacker attack in the early hours of this Friday (10).

According to the message posted on the address, “internal data from the systems were copied and deleted”.

The author of the attack is assumed by the Lapsus$ Group, which said that 50 terabytes of information had been removed from the system and is in the group’s possession.

“Contact us if you want the data back”, says the message on the website.
