Government needs to review ways of collecting to increase spending, says economist

In an interview with CNN this Tuesday (22), the chief economist at Inter, Rafaela Vitória, assessed that the elected government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) needs to “review current expenses and rethink the origin of resources” so that the PEC do Exult is better managed.

“If the government wants to increase spending without reviewing those that are obsolete, it is necessary to increase revenue and think about where the resources for the PEC will come from,” she commented to CNN Novo Dia.

“I will give the example of Auxílio Brasil itself, which will once again be called Bolsa Família. As the Cadastro Único is outdated, the Aid can be redesigned so that there is a more efficient reallocation of the same volume of resources in the fight against hunger and poverty. Otherwise, you need to look for more sources of income. The government, today, with a debt of 75% and a cost of debt exceeding 6% in real terms, has little room to work with deficits and increase this indebtedness.”

Vitória argues that the rush to approve the PEC for the Explosion prevents the spending review debate from taking place.

“To revise some programs, more time is needed for a broader and more efficient debate with Congress, and more studies on resource allocation. Therefore, we understand that an emergency increase of around R$70 billion is reasonable. Above that, it is important that more studies be done,” she said.
