Government of Alagoas announces expropriation of neighborhoods affected by Braskem mine

The governor of Alagoas, Paulo Dantas (MDB), announced in a press conference this Monday (11) that he is considering expropriating the area of the five neighborhoods of Maceió affected by Braskem mining. The objective is to transform this region, currently owned by the company, into a state park.

“We determined to coordinate with our technicians and the government team to expropriate the entire area impacted by the disaster caused by Braskem and create a large State Park, similar to what we see in São Paulo, such as Ibirapuera Park. This will be a way of restoring this heritage in memory of the victims to the people of Maceió and the people of Alagoas”, stated Dantas.

The State Attorney General, Samya Suruagy, said she will take action to recover the properties from Braskem. According to her, the acquisition of these goods by the company was carried out inappropriately, without due payment of compensation.

Furthermore, the governor proposed that the Environmental Institute (IMA) carry out an in-depth investigation into the causes and impacts of the mine collapse, with constant monitoring of the affected area, including the air space.

During the press conference, Dantas also stated that he will participate in a meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino de Oliveira, in Brasília this Monday (12). The intention is to develop initiatives that aim to both repair the damage caused and ensure the safety and well-being of the population and visitors who wish to visit the capital of Alagoas.

Cases of depression in Alagoas

The governor stated that, since 2018, there has been a significant increase in cases of depression and suicide in the state, especially among victims of the eviction movement in areas affected by Braskem mining.

In December, joint actions were carried out with the State Government secretariats and health professionals to meet the needs of affected residents. In total, 7 thousand people were served, 4,890 of which in the health sector.

In a statement, Braskem highlighted that the area is being monitored. After the sinking recorded this afternoon, local authorities were notified, the company said.

At the end of last month, Maceió City Hall declared an emergency due to the imminent risk of collapse of the Braskem mine in Lagoa Mundaú.

According to Civil Defense, it was possible to notice the rupture due to movement in the waters of a section of the lagoon.
