Government of Minas Gerais suspends temporary release of inmates during Carnival

Temporary releases of inmates during this year's Carnival are suspended in Minas Gerais. The decision was taken by the State Secretariat of Justice and Public Security of Minas Gerais (Sejusp).

The ministry argues that the decision was taken in accordance with justice bodies.

The Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) understands that the growth of carnival in Belo Horizonte justifies actions to prevent crimes against revelers. In 2024, the capital of Minas Gerais will have 536 Carnival blocks on the streets, while last year there were 232.

The suspension of the “outing” will only be valid in cases where the exit appointment is made by the prison unit and does not interfere with exits determined by magistrates.

Temporary release is a benefit provided by law for certain prisoners, who can be absent from prisons for 35 days throughout the year, which are divided into seven departures of five days each. Generally, they coincide with holidays or commemorative dates, as these are dates considered favorable for resocialization.

With the measure announced by Sejusp, departures planned for the Carnival period must be postponed to another time of the year, at the discretion of the administration of the state prison system.

According to the MPMG, 3,760 inmates benefited from the “sayinha” during the end of year festivities in Minas Gerais. Of these, 160 did not return to prison units within the deadline stipulated by the Court. As of the last week of January, 56 were still wanted.

Monitoring people with an electronic ankle bracelet

This week, a strategic meeting between representatives of security forces and judiciary bodies was held to define the monitoring of people who use electronic ankle bracelets in Minas Gerais. In total, 2,214 people use the object.

“It was established that the approaches to those monitored will be carried out on an individual basis, with verification, by the computer system controlled by the Electronic Management and Monitoring Unit, of compliance with the limitations imposed by the Judiciary, such as the time stipulated for home confinement, the fence of going to bars and places with public gatherings, for example”, explains the MPMG in a note.
