Government of Rio publishes decree authorizing flexibility in the use of masks

The government of Rio de Janeiro published this Thursday the decree that gives city halls the power to make the use of masks against Covid-19 more flexible, including in closed places, where they are currently still required. Signed by Governor Cláudio Castro, the decision takes effect from the date of its publication.

According to the government of Rio, due to the high vaccination coverage and the fact that there are municipalities with low risk for the disease and others still emerging from the fourth wave of Covid-19 caused by the Ômicron variant, it will be up to municipal managers to decide whether or not to release the vaccine. the use of personal protective equipment.

If city halls determine the end of mandatory mask use in the coming days, Rio de Janeiro will have been the first state where the protocol was officially overturned.

Next Monday (7), the capital’s scientific committee discusses the release of masks in closed places.

State Secretary of Health, Alexandre Chieppe, recommends that people with respiratory signs and symptoms keep wearing the mask if they are going to come into contact with other people.

In places where the Secretariat determines that the mandatory use of a mask will remain in force, the penalties provided for in art. 5 of State Law No. 8.859/2020. In the event of conflict, in municipalities where measures to protect life related to Covid-19 are already in force, the most restrictive rule will apply.

According to the secretary, the measures may be revised if there is a change in the epidemiological scenario of Covid-19 in the state.
