The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, released, this Friday afternoon (18), the investment of R$ 150 million for the start of emergency interventions in Petrópolis, a city in the mountainous region affected this week by a large storm. .
The confirmation of the value was made by the State Secretary of Infrastructure and Works, Max Lemos. The amount will be released through an emergency contract.
From now on, the government of Rio will have between 10 and 15 days to finalize the basic project for the restructuring of the municipality. According to Max Lemos, the next step will be to hire companies to start the reconstruction work in the city of Petrópolis, where a storm has already left at least 123 dead, in addition to landslides, buried houses and missing people.
“We carried out the technical survey and selected the first works to be carried out. At the same time, the governor of Rio has just authorized an immediate investment of R$150 million. Now we are going to carry out a basic project to hire companies and start the execution of these works”, said the state secretary.
Among the emergency measures in the city of the Serrana Region are the removal of rubble from public roads, the reconstruction of footbridges, the demolition of condemned structures and the containment of slopes in various parts of the municipality.
The value does not, however, include all the costs necessary for restructuring the city, according to Max Lemos. According to the estimate made by the secretary to CNN, around R$ 300 million should be needed for all necessary emergency interventions in the imperial city.
The possibility of new rains in the coming days makes the situation even more worrying. Experts heard by CNN warn that the new precipitation increases the risk of new landslides in the municipality even more. Only this Thursday (17th), the Civil Defense of Petrópolis activated at least 14 sirens to warn of heavy rain in the region.
