At an event at Palácio Guanabara this Wednesday (3), the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PL), presented the video surveillance program using cameras for state security forces vehicles, an investment of R$ 236.5 million.
In total, R$3 billion was invested in public security. “In this program, there will be 5,849 vehicles from security agencies, Military Police, Civil Police, penitentiary administration, Operation Focus, Public Security and Civil Defense agencies of the State that will have these cameras on board”, reports the governor.
Each vehicle will have three cameras, two external and one internal. The governor himself did the test during the event and spoke from inside a car using the technology. “On the right side of the vehicle, there is a panel where the police officer will be able to see everything in real time. We will have full possibility of recording and tracking these images”, said Castro.

In addition to recording, the cameras have license plate reading and facial recognition, in addition to relying on artificial intelligence to analyze this data. “We have had cameras in vehicles before, but this is the first time that cameras have this technology, they are not simple images, but with quality and with a better condition to elucidate crimes and we can improve the public security process”, explains the governor.
In this first phase, the priority will be to supply the Civil Police, Military Police, Operation Focus and Civil Defense with these vehicles. “In tourism areas and areas with a large crime profile, we should reach 30 to 40% in this initial phase. In a maximum of 30 months, we hope to have 100% of the vehicles monitored”, says Castro.
The recording is preserved for four months under normal procedures, but Castro explains that “there is a button that you press to keep it recorded for a year and the courts can request this material at any time”.
