Government overturns injunction that could delay Eletrobras privatization

The Attorney General’s Office obtained on Monday morning a favorable decision from the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro and overturned an injunction that had suspended the holding of the Furnas meeting scheduled to take place today.

It was the president of the TJ-RJ himself, judge Henrique Carlos de Andrade Figueiredo, who granted the decision in favor of the government.

Furnas is a subsidiary of Eletrobras, whose capitalization process should take place until June 14th.

Economic sources informed CNN that the eventual suspension of the Furnas Assembly would have the potential to delay capitalization by at least a month.

The request to suspend the meeting was made by the Furnas Employees Association, alleging that the minimum deadline for its holding was not respected and that it was not duly informed.

Officials say the meeting is necessary because there was an alleged breach of the debenture contract in an operation that led to a financial contribution to Madeira Energia, responsible for the Santo Antonio hydroelectric plant.
