German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his government partners have reached an agreement in principle on the 2025 budget after weeks of negotiations, a source close to the coalition said this morning, ending a long dispute that threatened unity of the German government. “There was an agreement” overnight between Solz, Vice-Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (Free Democrats, FDP), who had been meeting again since Thursday afternoon, the source said. Cause of the crisis: the finance ministry’s demand to save around $30bn by 2025. The Greens and many Social Democrat figures have been calling for the budget deficit to be allowed to grow in order to revive the economy and fund Germany’s rearmament in the face of the Russian threat through a new suspension of the “debt brake”.
