Government plans new policy for transporting animals on aircraft after the death of dog Joca

At a meeting held this Thursday (25), in Brasília, the first step was taken towards the creation of the so-called National Animal Transport Policy – ​​PNTAA, which the government intends to launch in the first half of 2024.

The changes occur after the death of the five-year-old dog Joca, who was mistakenly transported to Fortaleza, Ceará, by GOL Linhas Aéreas.

The meeting promoted by the Ministry of Ports and Airports and the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) was attended by interlocutors from GOL, Latam and Azul, as well as the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear).

At the session, it was decided that Anac will conduct a public consultation to gather suggestions from society to improve Ordinance No. 12,307/23, referring to the rules for transporting animals by air.

Companies will also send their contributions within 10 days.

Next Tuesday (30), a meeting proposed by the Ministry to representatives of the National Congress is planned, in which Bills dealing with the topic should be analyzed.

In parallel, representatives of Brazilian airlines committed to studying the possibility of implementing a tracking system for animals transported in aircraft holds. The measure would be of an emergency nature, while the sectors involved debate how to improve the regulation on the transport of animals on planes to create the PNTAA.
