Government spent 26 times more on Yanomami health from January 2023 to June 2024

The Ministry of Health allocated R$34.2 million to the Yanomami Indigenous Special Health District (DSEI – Y), in Roraima, between January 2023 and June 18, 2024. The amount is 26 times greater than that invested in the period 2019 to 2022, when R$1.3 million was allocated, under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The unit is responsible for managing the activities of the Indigenous Health Care Subsystem (SasiSUS) in the region. The folder informed the CNN that the resources were allocated to expanding and improving the structure, such as permanent works and materials.

The folder also informs that sanitation works were carried out, such as implementations, renovations and expansions of Water Supply Systems (SAA) and Home Sanitary Modules (MSD), and in works on health buildings, such as Basic Indigenous Health Units (UBSI ), Indigenous Health Houses (CASAI), DSEI headquarters, accommodation and base centers.

Since January 2023, the Ministry of Health has increased the number of professionals, doubled investment in health actions and worked to ensure adequate assistance to this population.

“The actions are part of the restructuring of health and care policies for indigenous peoples after lack of assistance and abandonment”, he states.

Throughout Brazil, 34 DSEI are strategically divided by territorial criteria, based on the geographic occupation of indigenous communities. According to the Secretariat of Indigenous Health (Sesai), the Yanomami people have the largest indigenous land in Brazil, with 10 million hectares, more than 380 communities and 30 thousand indigenous people.

In 2023, the Ministry of Health recorded 363 deaths of indigenous people in Yanomami territory, an increase of almost 6% compared to the previous year, when 343 deaths were recorded.

The ministry alleges underreporting in 2022 and in previous years related to a “precariousness in the structure of indigenous health services and systems in recent years”.
