The governor of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region on Friday accused Russian forces of firing cluster munitions at a railway station in the city of Kramatorsk in an attack that killed at least 30 people.
Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko posted a photograph online showing several bodies on the ground alongside piles of suitcases and other luggage, but did not share what evidence he had of the type of weapon used in the attack.
Reuters could not immediately verify his claim.
“If at first they aimed exclusively at rail tracks, now they are not just rails but also fire a missile containing cluster munitions aimed at people. This is absolute confirmation that this (attack) was planned against civilians,” Kyrylenko said.
Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) separatists blame Ukrainian forces for the attack on the station, citing that the wreckage found in the vicinity is of ammunition used only by Ukraine.
“Wreckage of the Tochka-U rocket fell in the immediate vicinity of the station, this obsolete Soviet missile system is not in service with the DPR, LPR and the Russian Federation, being actively used by Ukrainian militants,” reads a separatist statement on its Telegram channel. .
The Russian Defense Ministry was quoted by the state news agency RIA as confirming that the missiles reportedly hitting the station are used only by Ukraine’s military and that Russia’s military had no designated targets in Kramatorsk on Friday.
