Governor of RJ says decision on New Year’s Eve will still be taken

After the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), announced the cancellation of the New Year’s Eve party, Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) gave a new version, in a post on social media, this Saturday, early afternoon (4) .

“I spoke recently with Mayor Eduardo Paes and we decided, together, that we will have a meeting next week for a final decision on the New Year’s Eve parties. In this meeting, health technicians from the State and the municipality will participate”, published Castro.

Earlier in the morning, Paes announced the suspension of New Year’s Eve celebrations under the justification of following a recommendation by the state’s scientific committee.

Hours later, he reiterated his position at a press conference to journalists.

“The reason for my decision is the manifestation of the scientific committee of the state government, which is different from what the governor had been telling me. Of course, the governor is not a scientist either. Like me, he doesn’t control his scientific committee, what those in science think, because it’s difficult. You will be challenging someone who has studied for that all his life”, he declared.

The mayor also said that there was a constant dialogue between him and the governor. “We are perfectly meshed, there is no difficulty in this meshing”, he claimed.

As the analyst of CNN Leandro Resende published, expert committees from the city hall and government disagreed on the organization of New Year’s Eve.

The state indicated the cancellation due to the risks involved in the agglomeration, while the group from the municipality evaluated it as a scenario of adequate epidemiological conditions.

A CNN requested a position from the city about the meeting announced by Governor Cláudio Castro and is awaiting a return.
