To the challenges of the present time – from the open wounds left by the pandemic to the “unthinkable until a month ago” event of a war in Europe that simultaneously triggers a “global tsunami of economic consequences throughout the production and consumption chain of the modern world “- said in his speech at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia, the President of the Panhellenic Hoteliers Federation (POX) Mr. Grigoris Tassios. Invited to the conference of the Cyprus Tourism Association (STEK) on “Tourism: The Next Day” which was held with great participation – in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Giannis Karousos and the Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Savva Perdiou – Mr. Tassios spoke about the “preparation that always makes a difference, especially when the challenges are great”. It should be noted that the President of the Hellenic Tourism Organization (EOT) Mr. Angela Gerekou, as well as the President of STEK Mr. Akis Vavlitis also participated in the panel of the first circle of speakers of the section “Quality tourism as a response to the crisis”. Mr. Tassios also answered questions from the public, with the moderator of the discussion Mr. Angelos Loizou, FCA ISHC and Special Advisor of STEK.
“We remain optimistic even in the face of the ‘perfect storm.’ He stressed that in order for tourism businesses to be viable the next day, their support should be continued by extending loan, tax and insurance obligations.
“In these two years we are building resilience with our work, our responsibility, our risks, our investments, of course together with the valuable state support in the periods when it was needed and targeted where it is still needed. And so we continue. But we have to see “To build the vision of sustainable tourism in the coming years, drawing on the experience of this period”, underlined the President of POX and analyzed the five goals of the effort, “in order to be able to cross the bar of challenges “:
The first goal is the green transition to tourism. Especially, with the surge of energy costs that we live now, the need for energy savings becomes even more urgent as well as for the utilization of alternative sources, especially in island destinations.
Sustainability is the absolute priority, a basic foundation for building the tourism of the next day.
At the end of the day everything is infrastructure. A destination must guarantee the quality of life first to its inhabitants, in order to guarantee it for its visitors as well.
Building the new digital reality (extroversion technology and innovative management know-how) create the tourist tomorrow.
Building human resources, both in new specialties related to the fields of technology and its applications, and in the classic specialties that now require additional knowledge and skills.
“Waiting for better days does not make sense, since only our own effort can bring the best days. The huge upheavals and the great difficulties, not only should not become an alibi of stagnation but instead should be a lever of acceleration,” Tasios and referred to the positive momentum for its utilization and specifically to the resources that exceed 72 billion for the coming years through the National Plan “Greece 2.0” and the Recovery Fund, the new NSRF and new tools, such as the New Development Law.
