A series of steps precedes the music’s most important night. O Grammy is the only award recognized by professionals in the music industry, such as songwriters, singers, sound and mixing engineers and producers.
But after all, who are the members of the Grammys? The Academy as such has three types of membership: Voting Member
Professional Member and Grammy Member.
Voters are responsible for choosing who are the nominees and possible winners in each of its 86 categories.
Voting members include, according to the Grammys, “artists, songwriters, producers, engineers, instrumentalists and any other member of the music industry.”
To be part of this select group, you need a recommendation from two leading professionals in the sector. In addition, the Academy requires proof of a career focused on the music industry, i.e. nominations and awards, established online presence, interviews, information from representatives, publicists, among others.
And to top it off, the person who is part of the Academy must have at least 12 commercially distributed singles with verifiable credits. These credits, organizers say, must be valid for five years from the time you apply for the Academy.
How is the voting process?
To choose Grammy nominees and winners, voting members must have active Academy status.
A select committee is responsible for reviewing entries submitted for the 86 categories and organizing them.
There are three groups, to explain in some way, into which the Grammys divide this organizing process. Entries are sent to members who vote in specific genres, i.e. alternative, pop, R&B, rap, rock, etc.
A second group of members is responsible for evaluating the year’s composition, arrangement, engineering and producer work.
And a third group is responsible for evaluating the works classified by the Academy as: immersive audio, packaging, remixed recording, history, album notes.
It is at this moment that the first round of voting takes place, as it is in the first group of this process that the nominees are chosen.
For the second and third groups, after the first round of voting, these evaluations go to a committee of professionals who choose the final nominees.
Only members with experience in specific genres and categories vote for nominees in those categories, says the Grammys.
Announcement of nominees and winners
After the first round of voting, the Academy announces the nominees for the awards. This is followed by a second and final round of voting where the winner of each of the categories is chosen.
Academy members can vote in up to 10 categories, according to the Grammys, in three different fields. In addition, they can vote in the general category, where the four most important categories of the night are: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and New Artist.
Once the second round of voting has taken place, these results are computed by the independent company Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.
The winner is the one with the most votes in the category. There may be ties and, in this case, those with the highest score are considered the winners of that category.
