After the presentation of the single “As It Was” last Sunday night (5) at the 65th edition of the Grammy Awards, two dancers of the British artist Harry Styles reported on their Tik Tok and Instagram profiles a technical error in the turntable used in the choreography, which referred to scenes from the music video, released in March 2022.
The “record player” was working clockwise, the direction in which the singer and his ballet had rehearsed for 10 days. The choreography, by Yoann Bourgeois, had to be adapted live, with the movements reproduced in opposite orientation.
At the beginning of the performance, Styles made a subtle gesture with his left hand and tried to bring the problem to the technicians’ attention. Unsuccessfully, the event camera showed a small stumble, when he tried to get off the platform and had to jump over the sloping edge to perform with his band at his side.
According to Brandon Mathis’s account on Instagram stories, one of the team’s dancers, the stage malfunction compromised what had been rehearsed.
“What you don’t know is that the moment the curtain opened and it was time for the performance, our record player started spinning backwards, freaking us all out on live TV,” he said.
“There was nothing we could do to stop it. So after a week of rehearsing this piece going perfectly one way, the moment it’s time to play it starts going the other way, and in real time we have to troubleshoot and do the complete piece in reverse. Professionalism, ”she said.
Dexter Da Rocha, also a member of the corps de ballet, recorded his experience on TikTok. “We did the rehearsal with the costumes and it was beautiful. We were ready.”
For her, the mistake was frustrating. “When the performance started, the turntable started going the wrong way. So we tried to get the technician’s attention and we couldn’t scream. He didn’t understand what we were talking about.”
“Since the stage is circular, it puts you in different directions. Having to change all the ‘patterns’ while something is moving, and having all this spatial awareness, working with people you didn’t know before, and we had never gone in that direction, was a huge challenge”, he highlighted.
The young woman praised Styles, mentioning that he “tried his best to be able to walk and reverse everything while singing and his whole duet, which was amazing. Unfortunately, the media didn’t know what was going on. They called it lethargic or boring, but we were just trying to stay on our feet.”
Both videos have been deleted from social media.
In addition to the performance by the former member of boyband One Direction, Styles won two categories at the awards with his album Harry’s House: Album of the Year, Main Prize of the Night, and Best Pop Song and Best Solo Performance.
