Grandpa couple celebrate 77 years of being together with a beautiful dream wedding

In 1944, in the midst of World War II, hundreds of men were required to go to the front to serve their country, so they all had to say goodbye to their families, friends and the women they loved, like Royce King.

Two days before going to war, Royce proposed to his beloved Frankie and she immediately accepted. Unfortunately, they did not have time to have a wedding like the one they would have wanted, so they ran with a judge to say “yes, I accept”. 77 years have passed and, at last, the couple was able to celebrate as much as they had wished.

Royce and Frankie have been together for 77 years

Royce, 98, and Frankie, 97, are a couple from Oelwein, Iowa, United States, who recently celebrated their 77th birthday together. When they got married, they had a quick wedding because Royce had to serve his country, but after so long, they were finally able to have the wedding they had dreamed of.

Currently, the two receive special care from the Hospice of St. Croix in their home and when the workers of the organization found out their story, they had the great idea of giving them the wedding they had always dreamed of while celebrating their anniversary.

The party was held in the backyard of their house and their children were present. Sue Bilodeau, her daughter, helped Frankie put on the dress, because it was an important day and she had to look spectacular. Everything was as if they were getting married for the first time. Also, in order to make the surprise bigger, they blindfolded Royce so that he would be amazed when he saw the bride.

We took Mom down the back steps and across the yard, and then she stood in front of Dad and then I was able to take the handkerchief off him and I said, ‘Are you ready to see your girlfriend?’ At that moment his smile was the biggest in the world.

It was a moving moment

Photographer Hilary Michelson, who captured every detail of the ceremony, was totally moved by the tenderness of these bride and groom. This was said in a statement to the hospice.

It was very difficult not to cry behind the lens when I was able to witness the excitement with this beautiful couple, and the love and compassion that their team poured into preparing this event for them.

Without a doubt it was a tender moment that will be forever saved in the memory of your children, grandchildren, family and friends.
