“Gravity of the situation” has changed, says Biden after calling himself a “bridge candidate” in 2020

President Joe Biden said Thursday (11) at a major press conference that the “gravity of the situation” has changed when asked about comments he made during the 2020 presidential campaign when he called himself a “bridge” candidate for the next generation of Democratic Party leaders.

“What has changed is the gravity of the situation I inherited in terms of the economy, foreign policy and domestic division,” Biden said.

“My long time in the Senate has given me wisdom about how to deal with Congress to get things done,” he added.

In March 2020, Biden billed himself as a bridge to future Democratic leaders, campaigning alongside his running mate Kamala Harris, Senator Cory Booker, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

“Look, I see myself as a bridge, not as anything else,” Biden said in 2020.

“You saw a whole generation of leaders behind me. They are the future of this country,” he added at the time.
