UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “particularly concerned by the recent escalation of violence in northwestern Syria,” today called for an “immediate cessation of hostilities,” his spokesman said. “All sides must make every effort to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as allow the safe passage of civilians fleeing areas where hostilities are raging,” added Stéphane Dujarric. “Syrians have been suffering this conflict for almost 14 years. They deserve a political horizon that will lead them to a peaceful future and not to more bloodshed,” he stressed. For the first time since the civil war began in 2011, government forces have completely lost control of Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, in a harrowing development brought about by a coalition of rebel groups dominated by radical Islamists.
