Wildlife Trafficking
Wild species trafficking is, according to the European Commission, the fourth most lucrative illegal business in the world, behind only the other three. It is estimated that the annual profit of activity rotates between 8 billion and 20 billion euros
And according to the National Network to Combat Wildlife Trafficking (RECITAS), a Civil Social Organization of Public Interest (OSCIP), around 38 million wild animals are illegally removed from Brazilian nature every year.
In combating this criminal activity, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and the Federal Police have carried out operations against traffickers and for the rescue of animals, including repatriation.
In 2024, Ibama data show that 22,287 wild animals were seized and sent to wild animal screening centers (cetas), a place responsible for receiving the animals and recovering them.
The data, extracted from the Cetas Information System (Siscetas), managed by the Biodiversity and Forests Board (DBFLO) Ibama do not include animals from voluntary deliveries. The number refers to animals seized in various situations, from sale in fairs to repatriation for trafficking. However, there are no data from 2023 to have an increase comparison.
