Greece freezes asylum for Syrians after the fall of Assad

Greece has decided to suspend asylum screening procedures for Syrian refugees, after the fall of Bashar al-Assad by jihadists. The country is following the example of Austria and Germany, but is asking the European Union to issue guidelines, unlike the two central European states which are acting individually due to internal political pressures. The Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, is expected to have relevant contact with the new Commissioner for Internal Affairs of the EU, Bruner, ahead of the Council of European Ministers of the Interior and Migration. Earlier, Austrian Chancellor Karl Neuhammer announced that the granting of asylum will be suspended, as well as the family reunification program. “The political situation in Syria has changed fundamentally and rapidly in recent days,” he said.
