Greece starts tourist season earlier to meet ‘high demand’, V. Kikilias tells Reuters

The Greek Minister of Tourism stated today that the tourist season will officially start in March, earlier than other years, and that there are “positive signs” for a good summer this year.

“There is great demand and great momentum for Greek tourism in 2022,” said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias. “Big travel agents, big airlines, want to extend the season (from March to December).”

“There are strong indications for Greek tourism,” he told Reuters in an interview.

Mr. Kikilias refused to give any forecast for this year, saying only that it will be better than 2021.

Greece exceeded its revenue target in 2021, which the minister cited “as a positive sign of optimism”. He stressed to the British agency that “the summer season starts for us this year on March 1” and that there is already a demand for travel.

“After the huge crisis of global public health, people tend to want to travel, enjoy their holidays, spend money and I think that Greece is in a favorable starting position,” said the Greek minister.

“Yes, the pandemic continues to exist but we have the weapons to deal with it – vaccination, new drugs.”
