Greek doctor in India: The Indian strain spreads very easily

Shocking Michalis Barbas, a Greek professor at a university hospital in India who has been instructed, speaking to SKAI, about the situation prevailing in the country where cases and deaths from coronavirus have exceeded all expectations.

“The images we see every day are a constant struggle. Ambulances come one after the other. Many people are terrified. “18.4 million people have fallen ill with coronavirus to date,” said Michalis Barbas.

As he explains, he sees doctors and nurses fighting a huge battle every day. Even hotels have been turned into hospitals, with thousands of patients waiting in cars and on the sidewalks for some oxygen: “India is currently in a big crisis. It is natural for many areas to be deficient in oxygen. All this was done within a week and a half. We wholeheartedly support this effort. “Doctors and nurses are already giving a big fight.”

Patients die at the gates of hospitals. Restrictive measures are imposed in the capital for at least another week.

“The next ones will need 500,000 beds, 200,000 nurses and 150,000 doctors! The Indian strain spreads very easily. It is natural for everyone to be worried. “We know that India will win,” said Michalis Barbas.

The situation in the country mourning the fourth highest number of victims on the planet is described as chaotic.

“The few members of the Greek community in the country of 1.5 billion inhabitants remain united in this battle.”

Ready to send is the aid offered by our country to India, which is being severely tested by the pandemic, with the result that its health system is under extreme pressure.

More specifically, according to a statement from the Civil Protection, the Greek government responds immediately to the request of the Indian authorities and through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, has ready to send 90 oxygen cylinders with a total capacity of 440 liters, as well as medical supplies (masks, gloves and more means of self-protection).

“From the first moment that the request for assistance became known, the Civil Protection mobilized for the supply of oxygen cylinders”, it is emphasized in the announcement.

“Greece’s response to each country ‘s call for assistance is self – evident. In this battle that the world community is fighting against the pandemic, our country is present wherever and whenever it is needed. Greece is also an active member of the European Civil Protection Mechanism and actively supports the EU RescEU – we are one of the first countries to participate in the creation of the European Common Reserve for vital medical equipment related to pandemic management . “I sincerely hope that Greece’s contribution will offer relief to the afflicted India”, noted the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardalias.
