Greek supermarkets are starting to electrify

By Giorgos Lampiris

A broad plan for the creation of charging points and the installation of chargers is now being implemented by the large supermarket chains nationwide. The specific movements focus on their activity in the provision of electric chargers for charging electric vehicles throughout their network. Supermarkets are not missing from the new equation created in Greece, given that staying in a store is a good opportunity for the driver-consumer to charge the battery of an electrically driven vehicle. At the same time, however, the increase in the price of gasoline and its constant maintenance at levels above two euros from the beginning of March until today, for some people, is another incentive to switch to an alternative power supply for their vehicles.

The Sclavenitis agreement with PPC for the PPC Blue service

As we are informed, the installation of charging points in the stores of the Sklavenitis group, in collaboration with PPC, is also in the works, having as its object the installation of chargers through the PPC Blue service. Chargers have already been installed in some of the stores and properly designed and lined parking and charging positions for electric vehicles have already been created.

AB Vassilopoulos: The installation of 400 new chargers in 2022 is planned

For its part, AB Vasilopoulos had started collaborating in 2021 with PPC for the installation of chargers in a significant part of its network. According to company sources, 360 chargers were installed last year and more than 400 more are expected to be installed this year. The process of installing charging points last year involved 70 stores and this year is in full swing and is expected to cover a significant part of the chain’s network. According to the same sources, the plan to install electric chargers will be completed within the next two years and the implementing body is PPC, through the PPC Blue service, which offers electrification solutions for private companies and public organizations nationwide.

Accordingly, Lidl Greece places chargers in all the stores it creates, while the chain’s goal is to place them in its entire network in the near future. It should be noted that the charging stations are a product of Lidl and are not supplied by any of the well-known providers of the Greek market, as reported by the company’s sources. In the field of electricity supply, Lidl Hellas cooperates with Protergia of the Mytileneos group.

As far as the My market chain of stores is concerned, its planning foresees the installation of 500 nrg incharge chargers in 250 My market retail stores as well as in Metro Cash & Carry wholesale points. The Metro group, which includes the aforementioned stores, also implements the same investments in the field of alternative energy sources. We remind you that in the planning of the business is an investment of 18 million euros for the installation of photovoltaic systems both in the stores and in the warehouses of the Metro group. The completion of this design is planned for the next two years.

Masoutis: Licensing is imminent, which will pave the way for the operation of the chargers – Collaboration with nrg

Masoutis has also entered into a partnership with nrg of the Motoroil group, however, according to sources close to the company, the operation of the chargers has not yet started. The same sources state that the completion of the required permits is pending, which will pave the way for the operation of the network of electric chargers in the stores of the supermarket chain. Stations have already been established in a significant part of the network in Attica as well.

Looking at the market in the first five months of 2022, the rechargeable cars sold in Greece reached 968, with their market share of the total sales for the period amounting to 2.21%.
