The image, both of Greece as a tourist destination, and of Athens in particular, remains positive among foreign visitors, with our country maintaining its competitiveness, surpassing European averages. This is reflected in INSETE’s latest report on Greece’s overall reputation for its tourism product in the second quarter.
As stated in the study, in an unstable global and European condition where most destinations face similar challenges (labour shortage, inflation, hypertourism, etc.), Greece and Athens have maintained their competitiveness thanks to a multifaceted positive sentiment they share visitors and ambassadors in relation to culture, nature, gastronomy and accommodation.
The conclusions are based on evaluation data from 25+ Travel Reviews Websites and OTA platforms (e.g. Booking, Google, C trip) that have submitted visitors for the tourist experience in terms of the various individual “components” (e.g. accommodation, food, attractions, etc.). The study presents evaluations of the experience and also examines the evaluations by country of origin of the visitors (USA, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy).
Only in June, Greece maintains (for three consecutive months) a score of 9 for the destination experience (eg accommodation, dining, sightseeing), while the European average is 8.6. Greece’s “net sentiment score” is at 52, 12 points above Spain and just 1 point behind Italy.
In the 2nd quarter of the year, when tourist activity and by extension the number of online reviews usually increases, downward trends are recorded in the evaluation of the experience based on the visit to most destinations in Europe. In this context, Greece, for the third consecutive quarter, maintained its competitiveness in this parameter as well, surpassing the European averages.
At the same time, the image of Greece is not affected by the war in Ukraine in terms of attractiveness of the destination.
According to the study, the summer visitor experience is expected to have the highest impact on the reputation of Greece as a whole. The ability of the country and businesses to ensure a satisfactory tourist experience for visitors will be key to maintaining the competitiveness of Greek tourism.
