‘Green light’ for the sale of abortion pills in the US: They will now be sold by pharmacies

To sell pills abortion will now be allowed in pharmacies of the USA as announced yesterday Tuesday (3/1) by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The measure in question would greatly expand women’s access to abortion, at a time when more and more states are trying to limit that right.

A prescription will be required to buy the pills. Until now these pills were only available at a few online pharmacies or women could get them from doctors or clinics.

The demand for pills abortion has increased in the US since the Supreme Court in June overturned the historic Roe v. Wade decision that protected women’s right to abortion for half a century.

Abortion pills are already used in more than half of all abortions in the US, according to experts. Moreover, they are increasingly at the center of the political and legal controversy over the right to abortion.

The FDA’s decision was welcomed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

“We are pleased that the FDA has expanded pharmacy access to this safe and effective drug,” commented Julia Kay, an attorney at the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project, as reported by the Athens News Agency.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the anti-abortion organization Susan B. Anthony List, for her part criticized the decision. “The Biden administration has demonstrated once again that it is putting the profits of the abortion industry ahead of the safety of women and the lives of unborn children,” he complained.
