Green transformation can generate more resilient economies, says Georgieva

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, highlights in a text on the institution’s blog published this Friday (4) the importance of controlling climate change. According to her, success on this front will also collaborate to make national economies more resilient, in addition to reducing the great potential human cost.

Georgieva recalls recent weather problems such as dry rivers in China, droughts in Africa, heat waves in Europe, wildfires in North America, typhoons in Bangladesh and unprecedented floods in Pakistan. “And it will only get worse if we fail to act,” she said, recalling scientists’ predictions of more disasters if global warming is not brought under control in the coming decades. The green transformation can lead to “a greener planet, with less pollution, more resilient economies and healthier populations,” she said.

The IMF managing director advocates action on three fronts: policies to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050; measures to adapt to the already unavoidable global warming; and financial support to help vulnerable countries pay for these efforts. According to her, these three points should be important priorities in the work of the COP 27 climate summit, which takes place this month in Egypt.
