Green vs. Black: Find out which side the characters in “House of the Dragon” are on

In the second season of “The House of the Dragon” the fight for the Iron Throne gets more intense with each episode, with Rhaenyra Targaryen at the head of the Black Council It is Alicent Hightower and her son Aegon II Targaryen at the head of the Green Council .

As the series itself has already stated: it is necessary to choose a side in this war of succession. And the characters are forced to support one between Rhaenyra and Aegon II, both children of King Viserys I.

Although Viserys chose his eldest daughter as his heir, things changed after his death. Aegon was the one who sat on the throne, under the pretext that he was the king’s first son, under the pretext that the king changed his mind on his deathbed – which was perpetuated by Alicent.

The civil war between the Targaryens – known as the Dance of the Dragons – is imminent, but with so many names and surnames, it is normal to get lost in who is on which side of the battle. Check out the list of characters who have already chosen who to support below.

Who is part of the Green Council of “House of the Dragon”?

The Green Council argues that Aegon II Targaryen must occupy the Iron Throne. The color is chosen because of the house of Alicent Hightower, Aegon’s mother.

• Alicent Hightower

Widow of King Viserys and mother of Aegon II, she is the one who declares to the kingdom that the king changed his mind about the succession before his death and chose his son to occupy the throne. In fact, she misinterpreted a conversation with Viserys, in which he referred to Aegon I, the Conqueror.

Alicent had three children with Viserys: Aegon II, Helaena, and Aemond Targaryen.

• King Aegon II Targaryen

Viserys’s first son with Alicent, he became the Iron Throne after his father’s death. Aegon has had temper problems and drinking problems since he was young. He is married to his younger sister, Helaena, with whom he has three children, still young: Jaehaerys (who died at the beginning of the second season), Jaehaera, and Maelor.

• Otto Hightower

Alicent Hightower’s father, Otto served as Hand of the King for the last three Targaryen reigns, until he was dismissed by his own grandson, Aegon, who decided to appoint Sir Criston Cole in his place. It was he who brought his daughter closer to King Viserys after the death of his first wife.

• Aemond Targaryen

Aegon II’s younger brother, Aemond harbors a grudge against Rhaenyra’s children after Lucerys blinded him in one eye when they were both children. He accidentally kills Lucerys while their dragons are fighting each other at the end of the first season.

• Helaena Targaryen

The only daughter of Alicent and Viserys, she is married to her own brother Aegon. Considered somewhat eccentric by the rest of the family, she is the mother of Jaehaerys, Jaehaera, and Maelor.

• Criston Cole

Sir Criston Cole was chosen to be part of the Kingsguard by Rhaenyra while she was still young. He was then tasked with protecting the princess. The two had a brief romance, but fell out after the princess rejected his offer to run away with him. Criston sided with the greens and became involved with Alicent. He was appointed Hand of the King by Aegon II after the latter dismissed his own grandfather from the position.

• Tyland Lannister and Jason Lannister

The twins of House Lannister, led by Jason, support King Aegon II in his ascension to the throne. Tyland serves as Master of Coin on the Green Council.

• Larys Strong

He arranged the deaths of his own father, Lyonel Strong, and his older brother, Harwin Strong (who, according to rumors, had an affair with Rhaenyra and was the biological father of her children). Larys was born with one of his feet deformed, which is why he uses a cane. He is an ally of Alicent and often brings her confidential information.

• Jasper Wylde

He is part of the Green Council as Master of Laws, a position he already held during Viserys’ reign.

• Grand Maester Orwyle

He was chosen as Grand Maester, the king’s healer, by Viserys and serves on the Green Council.

• Gwayne Hightower

Brother of Alicent Hightower, he goes to war with Sir Criston Cole.

• Borros Baratheon

Current lord of House Baratheon, he ignores the oath made by his father to support Rhaenyra and decides to side with the Greens after accepting a marriage proposal between one of his daughters and Aemond Targaryen.

Who is part of the Black Council?

The Black Council is headed by Rhaenyra Targaryen and includes all those who support her ascension as queen. The colors of House Targaryen are red and black, and Rhaenyra is often seen dressed in the latter.

• Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen

The eldest daughter of the late King Viserys, who named her heir to the Iron Throne, defying the traditions of succession that favored sons. Despite having sons by his second marriage, to Alicent Hightower, Viserys did not change his mind and kept Rhaenyra as his heir.

Rhaenyra married twice. To Laenor Velaryon, with whom she had three sons: Jacaerys, Lucerys (who was killed at the end of the first season) and Joffrey Velaryon (who is still a child in the series) — although the boys’ biological father is Harwin Strong, they are officially considered heirs of the Targaryens. And then to her uncle, Daemon Targaryen, with whom she had two sons, still babies: Aegon and Viserys (yes, they were given the same names as other Targaryens, which doesn’t make it easier for the viewer).

• Daemon Targaryen

Rhaeyra’s uncle, Daemon later becomes her husband. He is the brother of King Viserys and is often reckless. He was married three times, and in his second marriage, to Laena Velaryon, he had two daughters: twins Rhaena and Baela Targaryen.

• Jacaerys Velaryon

Rhaenyra’s eldest son, he will be the heir to the throne if his mother wins the Dance of the Dragons. Although he is officially considered the fruit of Rhaenyra and Laenor’s marriage, Jacaerys’ biological father is Harwin Strong (who was killed in the first season).

• Rhaenys Targaryen

A cousin of King Viserys, Rhaenys is known as “the queen who never was”. Although she is a direct descendant of King Jahaerys I, her claim to the Iron Throne was rejected because she was a woman, and Viserys was crowned in her place because he was the eldest male descendant. She is married to Corlys Velaryon and had two children: Laenor and Laena Velaryon (both dead, or presumed dead).

• Corlys Velaryon

Head of House Velaryon, he owns the largest naval fleet in Westeros and is married to Rhaenys. He dreams of seeing his descendants, Rhaenyra’s children with Laenor, ascend to the throne, even though he knows they are bastards.

• Baela Targaryen

Eldest daughter of Daemon and Laena, she is promised to marry her cousin Jacaerys Velaryon.

• Rhaena Targaryen

Youngest daughter of Daemon and Laena, she was betrothed to her cousin Lucerys Velaryon before his death.

• Bartimos Celtigar

Lord of House Celtigar, he supports Rhaenyra’s ascension to the throne and sits on the Black Council.

• Maester Gerardys

Gerardys is a Maester who serves Rhaenyra.

• Mysaria

Mysaria is always on the side that favors herself, but she has decided to support Queen Rhaenyra for now. The decision came after the queen released Mysaria from her prison. She knows the routines and secrets of the castle, and used to be involved with Daemon while they still worked at the brothel in King’s Landing.
