Chinese energy consumption of data centers and base stations 5G in the period from 2020 to 2035 could increase by almost four times, which should encourage these companies to use clean energy. This was announced at the end of last week by the environmental group Greenpeace.
The total electricity consumption by data centers and 5G base stations in 2020 exceeded 200 billion kWh, of which more than 60% were from coal-fired power plants.
Assessment of Greenpeace, by 2035 this figure will rise to 782 billion kWh, which makes this sector one of the fastest growing sources of carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to climate warming. Internet giants are among the largest consumers of electricity in China.
China has promised that by 2030 it will be the peak of greenhouse gas emissions, with many sectors of the industry will plateau or begin to reduce emissions as early as 2025. Nevertheless, emissions from the Internet sector could continue to grow and reach 310 million tons per year by 2035, according to Greenpeace.
