Greta Thunberg, not just the environment: donates 100,000 euros for vaccines to poor countries

“Nearly one in four people in high-income countries has received the Covid vaccine. Only one in 500 in poor countries ». It is the denunciation of Greta Thunberg on social media. The Swedish climate activist does not stop there. “My foundation”, he writes, “will donate € 100,000 to the Covax program to ensure fairer global access to the Covid vaccine.”

Covax significa COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access and it is a global purchasing system created in June 2020 to ensure that even the poorest countries have access to vaccines.

It is led by the World Health Organization together with Cepi, the International Coalition for innovations in the field of preparation for the fight against epidemics, and Gavi Alliance, a global system of public and private subjects that defends children and the health of populations. Funding is collective and comes from foundations such as Greta Thunberg’s, philanthropic organizations, governments and the private sector.

The goal is to distribute, by 2021, two billion doses to the poorest countries. As of March 25, 32 million have been given in 60 countries.

According to Greta, just like in the climate crisis, the populations most in difficulty are the first to help. The way must be the elimination of imbalances. “The international community, governments and vaccine developers must do more to address the tragedy that is vaccine inequality, we have the means at our disposal to remedy this great imbalance that exists today in the world in the fight against Covid-19 »he said in connection with the World Health Organization.

The difficulty of many nations can be represented by numbers coming from India. For the sixth consecutive day, over 250 thousand new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in 24 hours. In the last week, the record of 1.59 million infected has been reached. In the last day alone, the victims were 1,761, for a total of 180,530.
