THE Greta Thunberg and other activists detained for ‘several hours’ earlier today, following episodic protests over the expansion of a coal mine in the western German community of Lucerat, according to police imgs cited by the Agence France-Presse (AFP) and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

They were taken away in a police vehicle, identified and then released, a local police spokesman told AFP, adding that they had been detained for “several hours”.

In relevant images that have seen the light of day, the 20-year-old can be seen Greta Thunberg, dressed in black, escorted by police officers away from the scene of the demonstrations.

Since Friday, the Swedish activist has been on the side of the protesters protesting the demolition of a settlement in order to expand the lignite mine in the area.

Thousands of protesters refuse to comply with the instructions of the police and remain in their positions. The protests continued today with occupation of railway lines and road blockades.

The lignite mine, owned by energy giant RWE, is located between Cologne and Dusseldorf. The extension of its operation was considered necessary for Germany’s energy security, in order to compensate for the interruption of natural gas deliveries from Russia.

For their part, the activists denounce her “breach of commitments” of the German government for environmental protection.
