Grief over loss and separation affects refugee mental health, says psychologist

The war in Ukraine has already caused more than three million people to flee the country since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24. The information was released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) this week.

In an interview with CNNpsychologist at the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Organization, Julia Bartsch, pointed out that, in the face of the uncertainties experienced by the war, refugees face difficulties that can lead to the development of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“The first things that will affect these people are precisely this pain for the loss of what she left behind and also because of the people, the separations. Children will be especially affected,” says Julia.

She recalls that, at the moment, most refugees are women and children, due to restrictions imposed by Ukraine, which prevent men between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving the country.

According to the psychologist, the welcome in the first moments after the escape helps to minimize the impacts on mental health in the long term.

“We will find anxiety, depression and, if there is no first care, what is called post-traumatic stress, precisely because the person did not have that initial care. She will have issues related to problems with sleep and eating, when I talk about food, it’s the issue with appetite ”, she says.
