Military Police agents prevented the theft of copper wires and cables on Rua Buenos Aires, in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the early hours of this Monday (4), following a series of complaints from residents and local businesses about this type of activity. of crime in recent weeks.

The police intercepted a suspect as he stole the cables and then detained a truck with two more men and stolen material from Praça Tiradentes.

The suspects were arrested in the act and taken to the 5th DP (Center).

The theft of power cables has been a real problem for Light, the energy concessionaire carried out a survey in which it found that the Center (66) is the neighborhood in the capital with the highest incidence of this crime, followed by Copacabana (58) and Leblon (53).

From January to September 2024, Light recorded 294 incidents of cable theft.

It is estimated that losses amounted to R$6 million and almost 37 thousand meters of cables were lost.

The concessionaire stated that throughout 2023, 373 incidents of theft were recorded, which caused an expense of approximately R$4 million to restore the damaged electrical network.
