Group of 200 immigrants try to force their way on the Polish-Belarus border

A group of about 200 migrants tried to break through the border barrier between Poland and Belarus on Wednesday night (24), the Border Guard said on Thursday (25), as tensions rise in a crisis that powers regional leaders warn that it could escalate into a wider conflict.

The incident near the village of Czeremcha was one of the daily clashes between groups of migrants under the supervision of Belarusian soldiers and Polish forces.

The European Union says the crisis is part of a “hybrid war” by Minsk aimed at destabilizing the bloc and countering sanctions.

“They were trying to break through the fences by attacking them,” Border Guard spokeswoman Anna Michalska told Reuters. “They threw branches and stones, and the attempt was stopped by our officers.”

Michalska said migrants flattened a section of fence with logs in an attempt to cross the border. She also claimed that five migrants were sent to hospital suffering from exhaustion.
