The Federal Police carried out an operation this Tuesday morning (16) against a group that caused losses of at least R$40 million to Caixa Econômica Federal in one year.
Eighteen search and seizure warrants are being served at 13 addresses in the cities of Goiânia, Aparecida de Goiânia, Acreúna and Rio Verde. The report found that the targets are public officials and lawyers.
The operation also ordered the blocking of bank accounts used by those under investigation and the seizure of 48 properties and 44 vehicles owned by the criminal group, in addition to the seizure of crypto assets. By 7:30 a.m., eight luxury watches, two cars and a motorcycle had already been seized.
The investigation indicates that a group formed by businessmen, lawyers and Caixa employees were committing fraud in obtaining agricultural financing through the use of false documents and the corruption of accredited professionals.
“This operation began when a notary’s office rejected a bill that showed signs of forgery. From then on, Caixa was notified, conducted a preliminary investigation, found fraud and referred the case to the Federal Police. We began the investigation and found that there were at least 15 more counterfeit bills and identified elements of the criminal organization,” explained Federal Police officer Vitor Bueno Cardoso, coordinator of the operation.
The false documents presented were, for example, pay slips, IDs, CPFs and rural credit notes falsified before Caixa.
The losses, which exceed R$40 million, were incurred between 2022 and 2023. The group is being investigated for organized crime, money laundering and corruption. The combined sentences for the crimes committed could exceed 42 years in prison.
The name of the operation “Paper Land” refers to rural properties whose existence was only documented (“on paper”) and which were given as mortgage collateral in fraudulent financial operations.
A CNN contacted Caixa about the employees under investigation and is awaiting a response.
