The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, in joint action with the state’s Public Ministry, carried out this Wednesday morning (13), eight search and seizure warrants against a criminal organization suspected of embezzling resources from Banco Mumbuca, from the City of Rio de Janeiro. Maricá, municipality located in the Metropolitan Region of Rio.
The targets of “Operation Escambo” are traders from Maricá (RJ) and individuals directly involved in the scheme. They are investigated for participating in the crimes of criminal organization, embezzlement and money laundering.
The warrants are served in São Gonçalo, Niterói, Maricá and Tanguá, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio.
Investigations indicate that the suspects’ actions resulted in a loss of more than R$64 million to public coffers. The group embezzled a significant amount, which was managed by the bank. To do this, those investigated created false accounts (often without the beneficiaries’ knowledge).
Subsequently, the suspects would contact local merchants and offer 10% of the amount received so that they could convert the social currency into reais. The amounts would then be transferred to bank accounts indicated by the criminals.
According to the MP, the scheme is structured into three groups, namely:
- Prospecting traders capable of receiving amounts in social currency “Mumbuca” to later be converted into reais;
- That of merchants who participate in the fraud, and who received a percentage of the value received in transactions involving social currency;
- That of people nominated by those investigated to receive the amounts in reais, after traders exchange Mumbuca for reais.
Banco Mumbuca was established in the municipality of Maricá with the aim of implementing the distribution of financial assistance to people in vulnerable situations and promoting economic development in the location.
