Group video chats and channels for 1024 people: WhatsApp takes a hit on Slack

Today, November 3, the world’s most popular instant messenger WhatsApp received an extremely important update that makes the application even more convenient for an impressive audience of users from all over the world. For example, in “Communities”, which are designed to accommodate large groups of users connected by common activity (educational environment, corporate sector, workspace, or even residents of the same house), you can now add up to 1024 participants (previously only 512 people could be added), which allows you to significantly expand the possibilities of administration. And, of course, this is a serious blow to tools like Slack or Discord, which provide a similar set of features.

At the same time, WhatsApp certainly has certain advantages, such as end-to-end encryption, which significantly increases the level of confidentiality when transferring important data or corporate correspondence. Moreover, in Communities, administrators have the opportunity to make announcements for all participants through a special channel – also a very convenient thing. For the first time, WhatsApp developers began testing Communities in April this year, and now this opportunity to communicate with huge groups of people is available to everyone without exception. In addition, the developers of the messenger have implemented some new features that should improve the quality of communication.

For example, the new formats of polls in text chats will be extremely useful in a variety of scenarios – you can find out a convenient meeting time for most channel members, choose the date of a corporate party, or determine a movie that a group of friends will go to. These features, of course, have long existed in other messengers, but it’s no secret that WhatsApp is noticeably behind most competitors in terms of introducing something new. At the same time, the authors of the software have implemented another rather important point – now WhatsApp can run video calls for up to 32 participants. It is very convenient both for corporate meetings and for video tutorials, lectures, seminars for small groups of users or just friendly gatherings.

Considering that the messenger has already copied a lot of really important functions from competitors, and WhatsApp voice and video calls are of much higher quality than Telegram, such updates may well bring the software to the top.
