Growth should exceed expectations at the beginning of the year, says economist

O Brazil must register a growth higher than the projections indicated at the beginning of this year, according to the evaluation of the economist and partner of MB Associados, José Roberto Mendonça de Barros, in an interview with CNN this Sunday (28).

“It will be a little better growth than imagined at the beginning of the year. Current projections say that GDP this year should grow by something like 2%. In the past, less than that was expected,” she explained.

In July, federal revenue broke a monthly record, reaching R$ 202.588 billion between taxes and contributions — the best result for the entire historical series for the month, which began in 1995.

“Within this set, the performance of agribusiness is quite positive, both in terms of quantity produced, as well as prices and record export revenue. And that helps, directly and indirectly, the collection”, evaluated Mendonça de Barros.

The economist pointed out, however, that prospects are not optimistic for next year. Among the reasons that will negatively affect the global economic situation is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; high inflation and extreme weather conditions, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, which have affected countries in Europe and the United States, in addition to China.

In Brazil, Mendonça de Barros explains that there is “a legacy for the coming year of extra expenditures that have been authorized in Congress — that blew the ceiling, that created other expenses — that will exceed 200 billion reais and that has no counterparty. Therefore, the scenario for the coming year is one of deficit, of lack of resources”.
