The Urca Energia group announced this Tuesday (30) investments of R$ 500 million until the end of 2023 with the aim of expanding its biomethane production and renewable electricity generation capacity.
The contributions provide for the expansion of the biomethane plant in Seropédica (RJ), the largest in the country, from a production of 120,000 cubic meters per day to 200,000 m³/day by the end of next year.
In parallel, two biogas thermal plants, in the cities of Nova Iguaçu and São Gonçalo, in Rio de Janeiro, will be transformed into biomethane plants.
With the investment, the three plants will generate 400 thousand m³ of biomethane per day, consolidating the group’s national leadership in the production of the fuel.
Biomethane is a renewable gas, obtained by refining and processing biogas, which serves as a substitute for natural gas, diesel or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Urca’s investment plan also includes resources for a new plant to produce green carbon dioxide (CO2) from biomethane from landfill waste. The green CO2 will be “food grade”, with a purity standard of 99.9%, aimed especially at the food and beverage industry.
The group will also invest in projects to expand its renewable electricity generation capacity, currently at 40 megawatts (MW), and in improving the logistics of its associate Urca Gás.
Currently, Urca Energia has ten biogas and biomethane plants, in addition to 47 biodigesters operating in a unit that generates renewable electricity from swine manure in Mato Grosso.
“Even with the new investments, we continue to closely observe the market in search of opportunities that combine good business and a positive impact on the environment,” said Marcel Jorand, executive director of Grupo Urca Energia and CEO of Gás Verde.
“For this reason, we are also looking to expand the operations of our associates Gás Verde and EVA Energia in other states,” he added.
The group expects to end 2023 with a turnover of R$ 1 billion, double the estimated revenues for this year.
