THE Guardian released documents showing his government Vladimir Putin to maintain a relationship with private companies, which it uses in order to conduct cyberwarfare.
As stated by theguardian.com, the leak was made by a person who disagrees with the war in Ukraine. The Russian secret services – based on the documents – approached her Russian cybersecurity company NTC Vulkan.
So, leaked document links a Vulkan cyberattack tool to the notorious group of hackers, Sandwormwhich the US government said caused two blackouts in Ukraine, disrupted the Olympics in South Korea and released the malicious Petya software that flooded the websites of Ukrainian organizations, including banks, ministries, newspapers and electricity companies. Codenamed Scan-V, engineers working on Putin’s behalf search for vulnerabilities on the internet, which are then flagged for use in future cyber attacks.
Another system, used by Vulkan engineers, known as Amezit, is a plan to monitor the Internet in areas controlled by Russia while allowing disinformation through fake social media accounts. A third system built by Vulkan, the Crystal-2V, is a training guide for the destruction of rail, air and sea infrastructure. In fact, the software used by Vulkan’s engineers is described as “top secret”.
The classified documents date from 2016 to 2021 and were revealed by a whistleblower who opposed Putin’s war on Ukraine. A few days after the Russian invasion began, in February 2022, the source reached out to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung revealing that the FSB was behind the Vulkan engineering project.
“People need to know the dangers of this software,” the whistleblower points out and adds: “Due to the developments in Ukraine, I decided to proceed with disclosures. The company is taking malicious actions at a time when Russia is doing tragic things in Ukraine.”
