The municipal health department of Guarulhos expects to receive, this Wednesday (1st), the results of the sequencing tests of a 29-year-old man who tested positive for Covid-19 after arriving from South Africa last Saturday (27th). ). So far, the man has not had any flu-like symptoms. He became infected after taking two doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

The man is being monitored and is under home isolation, according to the city hall. He arrived on an Ethiopian Airlines flight that had a stopover in Ethiopia. The young man lives in the city of Guarulhos and had traveled to South Africa on a leisurely trip. The city is awaiting the sequencing done by the Adolfo Lutz Institute. The municipality predicts that the result should arrive this Wednesday.

This Tuesday (30), Instituto Adolfo Lutz confirmed the presence of the variant in the tests of two people also coming from South Africa. According to Anvisa and the state and municipal secretariats of São Paulo, the tests refer to a couple who he has no history of vaccination and would return to the African country if he tested negative.

The host city of the country’s largest airport, Guarulhos decided on Tuesday that it will not follow the recommendation of the State Government to suspend the mandatory use of masks in open environments from December 11th. The decision was taken by Mayor Guti (PSD), shortly after the confirmation, by the Adolf Lutz Institute, of the first two cases of the strain originating in southern Africa in the country.

“We must be on the alert. But there is still no reason to panic. In the world, we still do not have information on more serious cases or deaths as a result of this new variant. It is not yet known whether vaccines are effective against Ômicron. However, Guarulhos has already guaranteed the complete immunization of more than 85% of the population over 12 years old. Our team is following it”, said the mayor in a statement.
