Guatemala: A journalist who accused the country’s president and the Attorney General of a dispute was arrested

The Police proceeded to the arrest of the journalist Jose Ruven Zamora, founder of El Periódico Guatemalafollowing the accusations against President Alejandro Yamate and Attorney General Consuelo Porras for corruption.

Mr. Zamora was arrested at his homein the southern part of the capital, in the context of a money laundering investigationJuan Luis Pantaleon, a spokesman for the prosecution, told AFP.

“He was arrested as part of an investigation into possible money laundering. This is not related to his journalistic work, but to his business activity”assured Mr. Pantaleon.

Police and prosecutors also searched the headquarters of his newspaper, which its editors denounced as an act of retaliation for articles in which he accused the government and Ms. Poras of corruption.

“The attorney general carried out the threats against El Periódico that the president made. They will not silence us”was the newspaper’s reaction via social networking sites.

Last September, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) condemned the decision of the judiciary in Guatemala to open an investigation against El Periódico for publishing testimony accusing Ms. Poras of corruption.

In June, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) added Guatemala to the list of countries where serious violations are committed. Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua appear on the same list.

The general prosecutor’s office during the days of Mrs. Poras in its leadership is criticized because it launched a persecution against judges and prosecutors who had targeted organized crime. Attorney General Poras is being sanctioned by the US, which has included her in the so-called Engel List of “corrupt and anti-democratic” personalities that they are compiling.
