Guatemala: Dozens of Cuban Immigrants Arrested on Boat to US Arrested

The Guatemalan Immigration Service announced on Tuesday that two vessels carrying 50 migrants from Cuba and two migrants from Honduras were spotted trying to reach US territory by sea.

The vessels were spotted last Monday night by the Navy in the Rio Dulce area, where a system of lakes and rivers is located off the east coast of Guatemala, according to a press release issued by the immigration service that was made public yesterday.

Eight other Cubans, members of the same group of migrants, were arrested while moving by land in the area.

Guatemala’s immigration service described the use of boats as a “new trend in the region” in a statement.

The migrants were deported to Honduras, from where they had left, always according to the service.

Cuban citizens must now obtain and obtain a visa to be allowed to enter Guatemala. The same is true in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia, as the number of people trying to immigrate from Cuba amid economic problems has increased.

According to the Guatemalan Immigration Service, 84 Cubans have been deported so far this year after illegally entering the Central American country, part of the main migration route to the United States.

The number of Cuban nationals detained in the US-Mexico border area reached 16,531 in February, according to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Protection. This is the highest number in history.
