Guatemala: International airport closed due to ash from Pacquiao volcano

Its civil aviation service Guatemala Suspended incoming and outgoing flights to and from La Aurora Airport in the Central American country of the same name on Tuesday due to winds pushing in its direction the volcanic ashes released from the Pakaya cone, which has entered a phase of intense explosive activity in the last two months.

“Due to the change in wind direction from south to north and the increase in Pacific volcanic activity, volcanic ash has arrived at Guatemala La Aurora Airport. For security and precautionary reasons, the flights were suspended, “said Luis Argeta, head of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC), via Twitter.

DGAC did not specify, as broadcast by AMPE, exactly how many flights were suspended, nor the number of passengers affected by the development. He announced that nine aircraft were grounded, while an incoming flight from Los Angeles was diverted to El Salvador.

The Pakaya, whose crater is located at 2,552 meters and is about 40 kilometers south of the airport, has released lava in the last two months, while explosions are constantly heard and columns of ash and glowing rocks are erupted.

Civil Protection said it continues to monitor closely the situation in villages around the volcano, which are affected by ash rain. It has not been given so far order to evacuate.

However, the Pakaya National Park, a magnet for tourists, is closed to the public.

A journalist who had gone to cover a volcanic eruption had died on May 27, 2010 in Pakaya.

Not far away are the volcanoes of Fuego and Santiago, which always remain active. THE Guatemala counts somewhere in total thirty active volcanoes.
