Guatemala announced yesterday that it will provide asylum to Nicaraguan immigrants, who were deported by the US and do not wish to return to their country for political reasons, according to President Bernardo Auvalo. Under an agreement signed with the US in February, during a visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Guatemala welcomes immigrants deported by the Donald Trump government, including third -country nationals. “In the case of Nicaraguans wanting to stay in Guatemala because they cannot return to their country of origin because of the current political situation, they will be granted asylum,” Guatemaltekos Social Democrat president assured during a press conference. The measure is “a solidarity expression of the Nicaragian people,” added Mr. Arevalo.
