Guedes says he expects public debt of 76% in relation to GDP in 2022

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, said this Wednesday (14) that the federal government must deliver the public debt of 2022 at 76% in relation to GDP (Gross Domestic Product). The minister commented on economists’ forecasts about the government’s economic policy, and stated that there were statements that public debt would reach 100% of GDP.

“So, with this R$ 90 billion from BNDES, the debt is practically back to the level it was when we arrived. You are part of a generation that won two wars, without pushing the bill to children and grandchildren. The debt was 76% and little of the GDP. It will go back to 76%”, said the minister.

According to the Macrofiscal Bulletin, released on Tuesday (13) by the Ministry of Economy, which consults the forecast of market institutions on the Brazilian economy, the central government’s gross debt should be 78.19% of GDP this year. .

During the meeting with businessmen, minister Paulo Guedes said that there were mistakes made by financial analysts in relation to the growth of the economy in the country. “Some are making mistakes unintentionally because the structure of the economy is changing and some are becoming militant”, said the minister.

According to Guedes, the government is causing a change in the structure of the economy that traditional models cannot keep up with. “Firjan’s forecast was 1.5% growth with 7.4% inflation. If nothing is done by the end of the year, we have already grown 2.5% and could reach 3%. For inflation, there is already a bank, like Itaú, forecasting 6%”.

Paulo Guedes also spoke of excesses that, for him, are committed in various spheres, including the Judiciary. “Supreme Minister who orders the arrest of a deputy, commits excesses, discredits the STF”. And he added: “You have to stay within the four lines, when you commit excesses, you discredit”.

When citing the elections, the minister did not rule out the possibility of defeat in the election and said that the Bolsonaro government “will be the first to go out spending less than when it came in”. “We are leaving it tidy, but you can sink a lot depending on who takes over”.
